Birthday parties, anniversaries and corporate events as well as weddings round off only some of the events that we DJ. We also pride ourselves in providing the number one Wedding DJ service in Massachusetts.
We are a small DJ company and can give you the quality service that the large companies just cannot provide. With A True Family Affair DJ Service, you just can’t go wrong.
We are a full time disc jockey service. This means that we can provide services for your event day or night, 7 days a week.
In 1995 I set out to create a unique DJ service, and I believe I’ve done just that and more by treating every event completely different. While you may think our only job is to play music, it is so much more. Our #1 job is to watch and read the crowd. Every group has people with different music tastes, and it’s our job to make sure you get all of your favorites!
Our Beginning
When I decided to get into the DJ business back in 1995, I looked around and it seemed you could find DJ’s almost everywhere. (This is even more true today.) They were all offering pretty much the same thing. The biggest difference was the prices that they charged. I set out to change the DJ industry by providing a service that was different than all the rest, and second to none.
As I researched different mobile DJ’s across the US, I kept asking myself “What am I going to do that will change that industry? And “What is going to make me stand out from the crowd?” One of the common factors I found with most DJ’s was their sound systems. It seemed the theory was, the bigger the better. Having come from a music background, I knew that wasn’t really the case. When researching professional DJ audio systems, I wanted the best available. To this day we use the best quality sound systems available.
The second thing I noticed about DJ’s is that most wouldn’t reveal their prices on their website. Those that listed their prices were charging $1400 and up for weddings (5 hours), and only charging $50 to $75 an hour for regular events on average (don’t forget, these were the prices back in 1995). So the second thing I wanted to do was offer DJ Services at a fair price. In order to do that, I needed to find ways to save on expenses such as a website. In previous years, I designed a website myself, but our current website has been co-designed by me and my daughter, Rachel.
The next thing I noticed is that a lot of DJs claimed they specialized in weddings. But no one seemed to claim any other specialties. I spent countless hours on the web and at seminars learning all I could about weddings and wedding DJs. The first wedding I did was a small budget wedding and I served as their DJ for only $200. I made sure they were aware this was my first wedding, and it went off without a hitch. Since then I have been a DJ for more than 500 weddings.
I also discovered that a lot of DJs would offer discounts during the months of November through March. This is primarily because it is a really slow season for DJs in general. With already reasonable prices and demand for our services, we have managed to stay busy during these typically slower months without changing our prices*.
I took some instructional dance lessons and began offering group dance instruction to any and all of my events. I teach group dance to all ages from young kids, to adults of all ages. Our group dance rates range from the dances of the 1950’s through the hit dances of today.
Later on I decided I’d like to add teen events to my repertoire. Since I had already decided that I would offer only “family friendly” music (screened for lyric content; no explicit songs) I wasn’t sure how this was going to work out. Over time however, I have acquired a lot of the edited versions of songs the teens would want and typically to ten to twenty sweet sixteen parties each year. I have also done DJing for several high school socials, and Jr. & Sr. proms yearly*.
When I decided to hire some other DJs to join my business, I interviewed more than 50 people that applied Because of the high number of people that applied for a job with A True Family Affair DJ, I was able to choose only the best to join my team. They also provide the same quality music that A True Family Affair has become known for.
As technology continues to advance, so do we. We have dance lights, uplighting, and electronic song request capability.
